George Eliot was one of the greatest novelists of the 19th century. She was self-educated to an extraordinary degree and corrresponded with the top literary, philosophical and scientific figures of Europe. Middlemarch is supposed to be her best novel. But Daniel Deronda, I think, surpases it. This BBC production is extremely well done. In only three episodes it delivers all of the major themes of the book accurately and entertainingly. Especially well done is the portaryal of Gwendolen Harleth, Eliot's best drawn character. Another major theme is the observation of anti-semitism and the beginnings of zionism in its best form.

A reasonable watch. Odd to see a movie that can be anti semetic and pro semetic at the same time. Nice to see a movie that hasn't got swearing.
