The R4. I have been shooting for 27 years. The R4 is an excellent camera 5 meter modes, M,A, A spot, , Program,Time, Buy only serial number above 160,000 not good for long exposure work, as battery drains do to electric shutter. carry extra batteries, Light built hardy. Problems back door is a little strange in design foam wears out, instead of felt like other companies, the viewfinder is hard to see meter settings not LED but back lit from natural light a 19, 0r 21 mm lens shade will block it. takes sometime to get used to it. Do not get this camera wet (rain storms) it is to sensitive . Loading film be careful not to crack plastic spool. Read dave youngs site free manuals. All the Website chat say it is no R6.2 or R9 and it is not.will tell you this camera is a Minolta and built in Portugal so are a lot of fancy Leica cameras, they outsource there divisions, just like Toyotas,Dewalt, Apple and Dell. but it is cheap and a good solid well built camera that takes very good color rendition and clarity lenses. I hope this helpsRead full review
This a Minolta camera under Leica brand, that is, and it is good, solid well made, works great, have a metal body, it is simle in functions, have a good automatic mode a 70´s camera, all models of R4 are compatible with the motor drives, this is one of the most complete Leica R cameras, before the R8 and R9, so forget R5, R6 or R7 if you want a good and cheap Leica camera go for R4

I love and appreciate the ease of operation and smoohness of the mechanism. Its quietness and speed becomes instinctive as you learn its characteristics and balance. Is yet another of its attributes It is highly versitle . It is a camera that comes from a long line of 'Thoruoughbreds since Oscar Barnack concieved it at the turn of the last century. I have been using Leica rangfinder cameras for the last 30 years ant this my first Leicaflex. I am more than deligted. My Regards to all - John Downes
The Leica R4 is a compact nice looking camera with all the right features. It has the real Leica quality, the right look and you will love holding it in your hands! I've got about 18-20 Nikon-bodies (F5, F4, F3, F2, F Ph, FA, FE, FE2,...), one Leica R3 and 3 Hasselblad, but the R4 is really my favourite!
The R4 is based on the Minolta XD Series body shell (just as the R3 was based on the Minolta XE-7) It took a bit to get things sorted out and period articles (1980) recommend avoiding Leica R4 bodies under 1,600,000 SN. This is 1,5xx,xxx and it works just fine. I am pretty sure, by now, only the strong ones (or fixed ones) survive. I am amazed at how low (dang I should have grabbed that extra Re R5 and R6 before I let the world know) Leica R Bodies and Lenses are in terms of value for money. This excellent to excellent plus body cost $76. I just picked up a SL2 from Germany for $225! Lenses range from $250 to $500-600 for the common ones. I was a strong supporter of Newspace and it's ilk here in Portland and am somewhat saddened when a Hipster Shooter proudly announces they picked up an AE-1 and lens for $125 or $175 when, with a little more legwork they could be shooting with a legend...And the R4-R4s R4modP R5 RE R6 R6.2 and R7 have databank contacts so maybe someday someone will home-brew a digital back for them Eclipse Shot Stayton Oregon 500mm Thanks MarkRead full review
