I am not a professional photographer, but I have been taking photographs with SLR cameras since 1970. I bought the Nikkor 50mm 1:1.8 G lens because I want to take portraits of my family and especially my grandchildren as well as close ups and have the subject really stand out of the photo, the technical term for this effect is “Bokeh”. When we normally look at things, the object that we are looking at is in focus and stands out, and things behind it are not, however we don’t usually notice this because as our eyes move about the scene they are constantly refocusing giving us the illusion that everything is in focus. In Pre-digital photography many good cameras came with a prime lens and it usually had an aperture of F1.8, making it relatively easy to take a close up or portrait with a very shallow depth of field. The shallow depth of field makes the subject really stand out, almost leap out of the photo. Today, it’s the reverse; most good digital cameras come with a kit of zoom lenses and no a prime lens. The zoom lenses usually have an aperture of F3.5 – F6.3, and are great for most photographic images, but at these apertures it is almost impossible to create the image I am after. The Nikkor 50mm 1:1.8 G lens is a good quality, fast lens at a good price, the minute I attached it to my camera I was able to take images with a very sharp subject and the printed image made you think you could actually touch the subject because it sort of leaped out at you. I highly recommend this lens for close up and portrait images.Read full review
Compact and lightweight, excellent value Nikkor lens. Perfect light surrounds image being captured. Even better than i expected. Enjoy using the different focus mechanism also. Highly recommend-

I have a nikon D5500 camera, I knew beforehand that it would only work as a 50mm manual lens. Here two photo's to show you how good the images are.

Sharp, great bokeh wide open, quick to focus, and at a great price compared to the AF-S. If you have a Nikon body with internal AF motor, this lens is a must have.

I am a DSLR beginner/hobbyist who wanted to start expanding my lens collections beyond the kit lenses. This lens can be used for a wide variety of situations, but I think it is summarized best with a dinner party. It can be used in dim/low-light (for example, a nice restaurant with ambient lighting) without need for a flash. The larger aperture is definitely the biggest benefit to me. Even though the lens may seem useful only for macro (close up) shots, like food, it's also great for portraits of people sitting around the table and having a good time. This lens is compact and lightweight, which makes it very portable and convenient. Please be careful to note that, while it is compatible with many Nikon bodies, the autofocus function may not work with some.
Standard lens for any photographer - inexpensive, high quality, rapid autofocus (no internal motor so you need a compatible body) and good for FX and DX photography. This is the current in a long line of 50mm Nikkor lenses and they have been the Nikon photographers standard lens for a long long time, for good reason! If you haven't got one already then you've probably got the f1.4... The manual versions are just as good optically so you can get an older manual version and it will be pretty much exactly the same, but a little bit cheaper and have less plastic in it - this lens is very much a plastic lens which makes it light. I have both the plastic and older (non auto) metal versions and the older one is tougher, but this one is so cheap it really doesn't matter!
I'we bought this lens as a first after kit zoom 18-55. The main task is taking portraits with bokeh. What can I say... It 100% fits my expectations. There are some reasons to use aperture priority mode with 1/4F in case I want more depth of field. But general quality of full aperture perfect. Once again - it's good to take more control over focus because automatic focus point selection is not so good decision. I prefer focus on central point and shoot after some reframe.
Incredible value for money. This lens focuses very fast (with my F5) is probably as sharp as any zoom, and certainly a lot lighter. Equally useful on full frame and 1.5x crop frame. Only downside is the cheap plastic build.

Great little lense with good optics for the budget price. unless you are shooting in really low light where a 1.4 would give you more flexibility this a really versatile lense. Though not as tough as the older metal units it still seems to be well constructed.

This is an amazing lens– especially considering its tiny price! I recently tested all the lenses for my Canon 5D Mk2 using Focal and this little cheap lens achieved scores up with my expensive L series lenses. It is light, sturdy and takes very sharp images. Unlike most modern lenses, because it is a fixed focal length, it also has a depth of field guide built-in.
