What can I say, I’ve been a total horror buff since I was a kid growing up in the 80’s (perfect time to be a horror movie loving child), but somehow I missed this one. A friend showed it to me a few years ago and it just stuck in my head (get it!, get it!!). During my last round of ebaying I got the Millennium edition (VERY cool, tons of extra features) for a very modest price, that was like two weeks ago and I’ve watched the movie at least once a night since. If you like H.P. Lovecraft’s work, the movie of course differs a bit from the original book Herbert West: Re-Animator published in 1922, but mostly it was just updating things to more modern times and the specifications of how West looks. Overall I thought it still stayed very true to the whole feel of ‘Lovecraftian Horror’. Jeffrey Coombs is quite outstanding as Herbert West, an overly self confident, smug little scientist who manages to creep me out in scene after scene either by the way he delivers his dialogue or little movements of his face or body language. I’m absolutely in love with this movie. West is driven to make his ‘Re-Agent’ work at all costs, even that of his schooling and later on in the series even his freedom. Employing the work of fellow med student Dan Cain (awesome supporting role by Bruce Abbott), West steals, blackmails and kills his way to what he wants. Only one thing, he can’t seem to make the Re-Animated come back without being homicidally violent. Hmmm…. Those pesky details. :) Also starring Barbara Crampton as Megan Halsey, David Gale as Dr. Carl Hill and Robert Sampson as Dean Halsey. All do a very good job in their roles; I particularly liked David Gale’s acting. Directed by Stuart Gordan, produced by Brian Yuzna, this movie is a classic 80’s horror with tons of blood, nudity and general mayhem. Differs from other 80’s horrors in that it’s doesn’t have that hokey comedy that’s in so many old horrors of the time, it’s still there, but most humor is quite sardonic and delivered very dry (loved it). Bonuses are a well written script, far above average acting and above average directing combined for an outstanding movie. One of my favorites now, if you consider yourself a horror fan, this is a must see for sure. No questions about it now! Go! You’ll be glad you did. Side note about the different editions The Millennium Edition by Elite Entertainment is the best set in the price vs. features column; I got mine for eight dollars which I found quite reasonable. Director commentary, commentary by all major cast, tons of interviews, 16 extended scenes, one deleted scene and quite a bit more, it’s a good one. True fans (which in these two short weeks I have undeniably become) will most likely want to shoot for the Anchor Bay Collection with the limited edition Re-Agent syringe highlighter. If you can get one of these babies brand new go for it, to give you an idea of good prices, I got mine at a local Hastings (movie/book/music store) for 17 dollars. It comes with everything the Millennium Edition has plus the LE highlighter and an exclusive 70 minute featurette called RE-ANIMATOR RESURRECTUS. Happy watching!!!Read full review
Despite straying somewhat from the original Lovecraft tale, Herbert West - ReAnimator is one the better films to come out of the 1980's. A lot of the gore scenes are spectacular and Stuart Gordon has worked in plenty of dark humor to keep you going. Jeffrey Combs is at his finest as Herbert West, and the supporting cast is equally appropriate. If you could have only one gore flick in your collection, I'd recommend that it be this one.
Thank you

Great classic horror....1st in the "RE-ANIMATIOR" series a great must-have to true horror fans A+++
The movie "Re-Animator" is one of the greatest movies ever made! it tops all the classic zombie movies, and brings something compleatly original to the table! In my book, its the best in horror!!!
Unusual enough that you will be kept interested throughout the movie, but it's not mindblowing. Has some funny parts, but mostly the movie is just weird and creepy.
