I bought the film because I admire Christine Bales acting, this was hardcore as usual. It did a fantastic job of portraying the character, I felt it. Brilliant as usual.

Dark and bleak thriller about an insomniac factory worker whose waking hours are a psychotic nightmare. Christian Bale gives a powerful performance as the man, no more than a bag of bones, at the centre of this disturbing story. (Apparently he lost a third of his body weight to get the role). Roque Banos wrote the unnerving music.
A truly mesmerising thriller that is not for the faint hearted. But if you like your films with a dark edge this is for you. The film is a essay on guilt ridden paranoia and from the start it keeps you on your toes and glued to the screen. It was not until the end of the film that I could work out which scenes were real and which were his mind playing tricks. The whole cast of the film take their roles well and are believable in their characterisations, Christian Bale is awesome in his portrayal of a man on the edge of sanity. A great evenings entertainment.
OK I'll just start out with saying this movie was very good. This is one of those movies ya gotta watch more then once. I have only seen it once so there are still some things I gotta go back and figure out but I can tell ya that even after the first viewing you can see how smart this movie is. Christian Bale (oh how I love thee) is an absolute gem in this movie. He looks so horrible as he should being a man dying from insomnia, since he hasn't slept in a year. Why hasn't he slept....this movie will take you on a crazy ride to figure out why. Crazy things are happening in his life especially at his job (hence the Machinist) but is there someone really messing with him or is he just loosing whats left of his fragile mind? Plagued by crazy flashes and memory loss and confusion Christian Bale stumbles through this movie trying to figure out what the heck it all means. Jennifer Jason Leigh and Aitina Sanchez Gijon also give great supporting performances. (Particularly Leigh tho, she is amazing) The ending although predictable is exactly what you expect it to be. The movie is shot in mostly grayish blue overtones which work very well with Bales poor health and sickly look. A couple of bright shots of the supporting leads offer contrast to his condition. This is definitely a movie I recommend....see it as soon as you get the chance!Read full review

A well-directed film, with an excellent performance from Christian Bale who lost over 60lbs for it - his bony body is very chilling. The only downside was the conclusion, although this was only because it seemed to just peter out, not because it was wrong in any way
I remember it being better a couple of years ago.....seem's i forgot how slow the film actually was...overall an average film.....but interesting idea! Watch it but don't think you will end up buying it like i did.....
This film was quite good. Very dark and disturbing. Although it was a bit slow, it was still good. If you`ve seen another film-I won`t say which one cos it will give it away-you should be able to work out the end. All said this is a good film that you will enjoy watching. Even if the only thing that amazes you is the weight Christian Bale lost to play the lead part. Unbelievable! Mick M
This is a stunning act of discipline and will by the incredibly talented and devoted actor Christian Bale, who went on to completely recreate himself yet again for his role as Batman. An amazing story of guilt, insomnia and madness, and the destructive forces of the untold demons that can inhabit our mind. An inspirational portrayal that makes Christian Bale the most courageous actor of his generation and beyond.
