Inspiring story of a black woman's life. The book begins when she is a prepubescent girl born to free Muslim parents on the West Coast of Africa. In 1745 she was captured by slavers and transported to America by slave ship. She narrates the book as her life unfolds in Charleston, S.C., NYC, Nova Scotia, Freetown Africa, and England. The book not only portrays the way slaves were treated and lived in pre- and post-Revolutionary America, but the attempts by Abolitionists to outlaw the slave trade. It's the kind of book you don't want to put down -- you always NEED to know what happens next. I bought the book because I wanted to know more about how slaves were treated in America. Although it is hard to believe so much could happen to one slave -- the book provides historical references to things happening to slaves in the North/South and England.Read full review
I have a small collection of books that I am saving for my kids. This will definitely be one that they must read. If our society wasn't so squirmy about rape which happens more often than we want to believe, this would be an Excellent High School must read. It's hard to image slavery in the US these days. This book makes it vivid and proves to be a great resource of information.
