My use is stereo with subwoofer. The quality of music is ok, my luxman was superior. I also watch tv with this setup. The HK has obvious advandages, quality of video, ease of use. Trade-offs.

setting everything up can be very confusing I bought mine thinking it was newer then a 2007 and because it was an '07 there were no set-up codes for any of the things that I have like my T.V. cd player etc..so it gets 3.5 out of 5 stars ...oh yea it does sound great..

The Harmon Kardon AVR 145 is very strong sounding 40 WPC RMS x 5 or 50 WPC RMS x 2 AV receiver. Underrated power if you ask me. The sound quality of this unit is very nice. Some shortfalls is that It only has one subwoofer preamp output and there are no other preamp outputs so I think this unit could have been improved in that area. Also it is a 5 channel system so for those seeking more channels you may want to look at some other options. At first I was cautious about the power rating, but I threw that idea out the window once I hooked it up and listened to some nice tracks of Estaban. I did use a powered subwoofer with this system and I do highly recommend that you do the same. The quality of the music reproduction of this receiver is outstanding - you won't be disappointed. I'm very particular about this and I wouldn't say it if I didn't believe myself. I have a video on YT that you can watch about this unit that I think would be useful in your consideration of this receiver. You'll have to search for it as I can't place the link in this review. As far as looks you can't get a more elegant look for a receiver in any price range if you ask me. Particularly looks nice in lower light environments. Perhaps a Marantz or Mcintosh will look nicer but they are in a different price class altogether you're really getting a lot of value here with this AVR 145.Read full review

I love the sound and power of the unit. I bought it for future HDMI connectivity and the reputation of Harmon-Kardon's quality and value. The refurbished unit I received looked like new. I was surprised that the unit was also loaded with old firmware which I updated with a download from their website. Another reason I bought the unit was the "EZ setup" feature that is supposed to set up the phasing, crossover, and levels of your speakers. So far I have not been able to make this work and have been trying to resolve this problem with their tech support via e-mail. They must be swamped because it takes days for them to respond, but they do respond eventually. So--don't expect to get a unit that is perfect when you buy refurbished. Overall I am pretty satisfied with this purchase and would do it again.Read full review
Harman Kardon has always had a reputation for quality and this receiver does not disappoint. Sounds great, looks great, tons of connectivity and easy to set up (IF you read the manual). The automated setup is absolutely BRILLIANT!!! My only gripe AT ALL is the standby LED - the amber light is a little too wide and bright, but it does go away if you turn off the master power switch. I replaced a [certain large Japanese manufacturer] surround receiver (that cost more) and I could not be happier; the H/K has half the rated power, but that's just "paper power". My Harman Kardon AVR 247 looks better, sounds better, and is MUCH more solidly built.
Very good receiver for the money. Alot of nice features with the addition of the two hdmi ports and one exit port. Nice power curve, feeds a 5.1 very well. But if you have a 2.1 it will drive the fronts very very hard and loud. The only thing i don't like is the lack of control to the bass/trable with this unit. I ahve a HK230 unit and i can adjust bass and treble on it but the newer unit does not have this. It's not much but i do miss it. Guess i will need a eq eventually. Overall very nice sleek design with great features and clean sounding power.
I got a great price and a great piece of equipment- I spent weeks looking over various options after my home theater unit died- I assumed that a sony would be best to match the rest of my current equipment- but I didnt like the options that sony provided and when I saw this piece offered I jumped. It was a little confusing setting it up as HK has all the bases covered from rca plugs to HDMI, but once we used the HDMI and my wife bought a flat screen tv with matching techology it was a breeze. great sound !!! a note to all who are as technology disabled as I- please note that it is important to look at the age and sophisication level of your current audio video equipment as you go into the research phase of the buying process for new pieces. Never buy anything new that does not have HDMI!!Read full review
Great and powerful amplified receiver with a sleek, contemporary look. Has plenty of power to kick it out at high volumes, yet amplifies clarity and precision output at low volumes for the most serious of audiophiles. Lots of features with a well thought out remote -- tho sometimes it can get a little confusing --- especially for less technically inclined individuals and the elderly --- but otherwise, all in all, a great amplifier, especially for the price! I like this receiver so much, I have three (3) of them throughout the house!!!!
All around a great receiver, great sound and power dont let the watts fool you, sounds more powerful than it says, very easy to use.
I bought this product on ebay because it was what I needed for my own home theater project. It offers the features I was lookinf for, not to mention it's auto speaker's calibration system,HDMI,Component Video,Optical,CoaxialFarudja sound circuitry, etc. Also, it can be upgraded! But most of all, it's unbeateable price!!! What can? "I say I just love it is beautyful"
