I enjoyed immensely this first effort from Writer/Director/Star David Hewlett. You don't have to be a fan of "Stargate:Atlantis" to appreciate this movie; but it doesn't hurt - it features not only Davis Hewlett; but also Paul McGillion, Rachel Luttrell and Christopher Judge (all from the series). The inspired choice of Kate Hewlett (David Hewlett's real life sister) to play his on-screen sister shows in the very realistic banter and repartee between them in the film. And using his own dog Mars to play his on-screen dog "Mars" -also an excellent casting choice! You really must watch this movie at least twice (and preferably with the "Filmmakers' Audio Commentary" turned on the second time around - a real delight!!) to fully appreciate the well thoughtout screenplay and how things can change how you perceive them, the second time around. A really, really delightful film - get it!Read full review
In describing this delightful movie, the term Cinamatic Masterpiece immediately comes to mind. I found "A Dog's Breakfast" with it's off the wall comedy, to be an extemely entertaining film. A huge plus is that it's a movie the whole family can sit down and watch together. David Hewlett gives a great performance as Patrick, who is less than pleased to find out his sister Marilyn (Outstandingly played by real life sister Kate Hewlett) is engaged to acting star Ryan (Paul McGillion in a fine performance). The hijinks begin as Patrick schemes to get rid of Ryan, thens finds out that you might not like getting what you wish for! Full of dark, dry humor, a constantly re-appearing corpse and some side-splittingly funny scenes, this is one of the few movies I liked enough to recommend to close friends.Read full review
A Dog's Breakfast is a dark comedy that is fantastic. David Hewlett is at his best playing the neurotic, over protective, inept brother. If you like the character Dr. McKay from Stargate Atlantis, you will love this movie. Paul Gideon is great in his dual role. Christopher Judge is great. And of course Kate Hewlett is the perfect foil for her brother.
I am not usually a fan of dark comedy but being a huge Stargate fan (particularly Paul McGillion) I had to check this out. It took me months to locate a rental place that carried the movie but it was well worth the search. The quality of the movie is amazing especially when you know the details of the budget and schedule that they worked on. It was incredible. The actors are there because they WANT to be not because they are paid well, and it really shows in their performances. I spent most of the movie pulling myself back up off the floor. It was hilarious and just wonderful fun for anyone who enjoys a great comedy. I found it a LITTLE predictable but it doesn't detract from the movie as a whole at all.
Wonderfully funny, quirky, dark comedy - one of those with so many layers, you have to watch it several times to catch all the laughs. Perfect acting (especially David Hewlett), great concept and super twist at the end. I first caught it on TV while channel hopping and HAD to have it to view whenever I need a laugh. A little slow to start, but once you "get" the characters, you're in for a wonderful ride! Highly recommended!
It is such a funny movie. Loved it, although the dog isn't the main character in the movie.

Even if you just love David Hewitt, its a good movie. Add in the fast pace, laughter and the unexpected twists (combined with a little engaged induendo) and you get a great film whoes only flaw is a smaller-than-ideal budget and a cast of characters doing it for the lulz.
A very well written movie. No slow points actors were spot on. I have told many about this film.I think hollywood should take a lesson from this indie. It "aint" about how much you toss at a movie that makes it great, it's the style actors, editing ect. This is a dont miss movie. No i wont sell my copy!
This is a VERY enjoyable movie for all ages ! Pleasantly humorous without vulgarity or sexual implications ! It's one of the best comedies I've seen in a long time ! A must have for families wanting to watch an excellent movie on family movie night.
The movie was pretty funny. Paul McGillian's acting was (as usual) excellent! David Hewlett was funny too. Would recommend to person's who enjoy silly comedy!
