I am a fan of the Patrick O'Brien series of books that this movie was taken from. For me, this movie is a bit disappointing on the one hand and interesting on the other. Casting Russell Crowe as Jack Aubrey was brilliant but Dr. Maturin was disappointing, not at all as I'd pictured him from the books. The movie script was taken in bits and pieces from several of the 21 novels and as such tended to be hard to understand and not easy follow. The Nelson era nautical terms and language might be difficult for a non-nautical person to follow, my wife had difficulty understanding what was said. The ship was very convincing, built in 1970 as a replica of the 18th century Royal Navy frigate 'Rose', she was purchased and converted to the 'HMS Surprise' for the movie. She can be seen and boarded at the San Diego Maritime Museum (http://www.sdmaritime.org/hms-surprise/), I have been aboard and it was real fun to walk the decks and see where Captain Jack Aubrey trod the quarter deck. The rough life of sailors of that era was difficult and the battles were gory. The battle scene sound effects are splendid on my 5.1 Surround Sound system. In conclusion, this is seems to be a 'niche' movie for a limited audience, Russel Crowe and the O'Brien novel fans and others who like rugged outdoor movies.Read full review
This movie is awesome. The sets are authentic looking. The acting is terrific. The sound is big and realistic. It's got its roots in real history and that makes it even more compelling. They don't make movies like this very often. What we get instead is hyped up, comic book baloney. "Master and Commander" is made for intelligent adults, not the kiddies. It is one of my favorites.

I really like this movie in its entirety. However, I had no idea what I was missing until I purchased this movie on Blu-ray. I have a pretty good home theater system and there are much more impressive sounding systems by far. But I have an a 9. 8 , with about 7400 watts of continuous bass output and I still had no idea what I was missing. Not just bass output , but overall sound quality is greatly improved from all of the speakers. If you really like this movie , it is definitely worth buying on Blu-ray! Russell Crowe never gives a bad performance.

An excellent cast, a fabulous director who is a stickler for details and a great story. The British Naval customs and traditions make this movie better than any movie about the old sailing days I have ever seen. The action sequences are astounding and the special effects are awesome. If you watch it, you must watch with surround sound to appreciate the fabulous audio. It would seem that a sequel is in order, but you can't get any better than this one. Loved it. Fun to watch again and again.
An epic film depicting the lives' and death's of those that chose the sea for their life's duration. This film deserves a sequel and I will purchase and watch it if it is cast with the dame players.
