This unit is awesome! The sound is different, is way better with full body, if you pre-process it via this AV Control amplifier. It has enough digital (optic and coaxial) inputs to attach many signal sources. I do not use it for any video signal sources, just for audio. I hear the significant difference in sonic palette when the conversion from digital to analog signal happens inside this unit. I think that this is the best device to have for people that love top quality sound reproduction especially from digital sources, and especially for those who love soft Sony sound. I was lucky to find it over here on eBay in as good as new condition and make a fantastic deal with the seller.

After trying several Av receivers from Rotel, Harman Kardon, Pioneer, Marantz which was so much hailed on Amazon reviews, I decided to switch to Preamplifiers and separate Amplifiers. I was lucky to grab an emotiva UPA-500 on ebay for $350. Then the search for preamp began. My Boss, who is also an audiophile showed me how preamps works. My first one was Sony EP9ES. Sony was the last thing that came to mind but wanted to give it a try and then later proceed . While waiting for the Sony to arrive from Cali to NY, i saw an add on craiglist for Rotel 986. I quickly grabbed it and started playing with it. Then after some few days the sony arrived. That's when i heard the biggest difference in my audio search for the first time in my life. The Sony was wow!!! My neighbor knocked on my door and asked what i did to my system. The i was using Bose surround speakers with BIC F12 subwoofer. Few days later, I saw an Emotiva LMC-1 on ebay. I rushed and bought it too. It didn't satisfy me than the Sony Ep9Es. But the sony has only digital inputs which lacks analogs. The Emotiva blew my Subwoofer. So i decided to sell all of them and look for another Preamp. Then I bought Rotel 1068. I really love the looks with the silver and black. Initially i didn't like the sound till i started playing with the remote and tweaks for a month and more. Then came a powerful sound. By then, i bought bookshelf speakers front Mardaunt Short 902i abd Polk audio Rti6. A gemini gvx 15" subwoofer. I still realized i was missing something. Then upon reading so much reviews about Meridian, Lexicon, Mark Levingson , Krell, I decided to go for something i can afford. I saw the Sony Ta9000es with digital and analog inputs. I bought with software version 1.8 which i know has a new update 2.5 which i haven't done yet. But it brought a whole new life in me. It's wow!!! i bulit my home theater center with mac mini . Installed XBMC KODI and it has a built in dac . Now my neighbors can't sleep. feels like I'm running a night club especially if i switch the equalizer to movie stereo. AI sold the Rotel 1068 . I will be back to update you when i update this sony to the latest softwareRead full review
This particular component from the Sony ES line is outstanding. Especially when paired with the TA-N9000ES amplifier. Bear in mind the set fact; this is from the era when the ES moniker on any given Sony product virtually guaranteed quality and reliability. And not to mention, superlative performance.

Way better sound quality than I expected from a Sony. With this name brand I hope to have better quality issues than I have with the last couple of Adcoms I have owned. It is surprisingly heavy for a preamp. It has logical controls on the front. I only wish I had the correct remote for it. But the one I have changes the volume. That is the most important function for me. I can get up if I need to change something else.

I love my TA-E9000ES, I hate the included bi-directional remote control. Still the preamp is top notch with the best menu system ever devised, so easy to navigate you will be spoiled by it. Soundwise it is slightly warm at unity but pleasantly so. DTS is very well decoded but only to 6.1 so it is slightly behind the times, upgrade the firmware to 2.1 or 2.5 to enable all the modes, the firmware and unlocking keys can be found online. Gets a bit hot but most top-notch equipment does. Put nothing on top of this unit. Plenty of inputs, switches silently between modes, no audible relays. There is an amazing website dedicated to this preamp at http://home.online.no/~espen-b/ta-e9000es/
