  • Amazing Head unit and east upgrade for Toyotas without CarPlay/Android Auto

I installed this head unit in my partner’s 2018 Toyota C-HR. Through a lot of research I found that these Kenwood widescreen units are the best option for many Toyota vehicles. At first look they seem overpriced compared to other brands however as a whole package choosing this unit over a Sony/pioneer etc. worked out cheaper. By going with Kenwood there were many parts that weren’t required, these parts can total approximately $180-$350 depending on what is required for the specific car. Firstly, you don’t need a trim panel for most Toyotas, saving $50-100 depending on the car. Secondly, the included harness had direct Toyota speaker and power connectors, saving another $30-50 on having to buy head unit to ISO and ISO to Toyota harnesses. The biggest cost saving comes from not needing a steering wheel control interface, this unit is able to decode the Toyota signal without one and includes an adapter that goes from the factory 28 pin plug directly into the head unit. The SWC interfaces needed for other brands cost between $100-200 dollars depending on the exact unit needed for your car. The install in our car was almost entirely plug and play. I only needed two extra harnesses to make everything work. These were the Toyota factory reverse camera adapter and the Toyota AM/FM antenna adapter. By following some YouTube tutorials I was able to combine these adapters with the Kenwood harness to make one large plug and play harness. This did require some basic soldering (I have previous experience), but would not be difficult for beginners. The head unit itself looks amazing in the car and fits the factory cutout perfectly. It looks like it came from the factory with the new unit installed. Everything works, including the factory reverse camera and steering wheel controls. One tip, you need to enable the setting to turn the camera on when the car is in reverse, when I first installed it I thought the camera wasn’t working but I just had to toggle this on. Now it works as it should. The factory speakers sound much better than they did with the factory radio, as this head unit outputs more power to them. The external microphone for phone calls is outstanding, with the factory radio I couldn’t hear my partner over the road noise, now it sounds like she is sitting in a quiet room with the phone on speaker. It’s fantastic. CarPlay and AA work great. I really can’t go back to driving cars without it. The screen is also very bright and vibrant, making it easy to see even in direct sunlight. The screen also had a motorised tilt function so that you can angle it upwards for older cars that have the radio mounted low in the dash. Overall, if you’re thinking about buying one of these to upgrade your car, do it. You will not regret the purchase. I found the install easy, but if you aren’t confident with soldering and electronics I would suggest getting a professional to install it for you.
