This is one of the most under-rated albums of all time. It would be impossible for me to disagree with the “mob” anymore than I already do. I think one of the main reasons why this album did not receive the sales that it should have is due to the fact that it was just released at the wrong time, which is most unfortunate. I think Madonna really revels herself to the public. (In a different manner than what we are used to, if you catch my drift.) The songs seem to be much more personal than in any of her other albums, as they talk about Madonna coming to grips with her fortune and fame, her acceptance of her mother’s tragic death, and “finding herself” in terms of religion. As far as my favorite song in the album goes, I would have to say it would have to be “Easy Ride,” even though each song featured in this album is wonderful in its own unique way. Although “Easy Ride” is probably one of the lowest ranking songs in Madonna’s career, I feel that is sends one of her most powerful messages. After all, the message pertains to all of us, since are lives will all surely go “round and round, just like a circle,” and if we try hard enough, we can finally “see the clearer picture.” I suppose the bottom line is this: you NEED to purchase this CD. Perhaps it will help you on your journey to “finding yourself.” I know it has helped me.Read full review
This is a very good CD, though not Madonna's best. But it's up there with her greatest. I love the idea of it all, and it comes across of spectacular in sound and composition. It has a collection of great songs, but “American Life“, “Hollywood“, “Nobody Knows Me“ & “Mother and Father“ are by fat the best. Be warned, this is not classic Madonna, it’s much more stripped down and has a lot of acoustic string arrangements. However it also has the electro feel we all know from the Music album. This would make and interesting addition to any music collection. I advise anyone to listen to it at least once. I rate it a B+.
Overall, I really do like the album-- yet I do not feel it is one of her best. Yes, most of the tunes are upbeat and catchy. But with the exception of maybe the first two on the track they seem to be missing something. Some people compare this album with Confessions on a Dance Floor. To me there is no comparison. Confessions is like 10 times better in my opinion. Even though it may not be one of her best it is still worth having and I am glad I purchased it. It completes my collection. No album that she does, in my opinion, is all bad.
Should I change My Name? Will I Go Very Far? Track Listing 1. American Life 2. Hollywood 3. I'm So Stupid 4. Love Profusion 5. Nobody Knows Me 6. Nothing Fails 7. Intervention 8. X-Static Process 9. Mother & Father 10. Die Another Day - (from "James Bond's Die Another Day") 11. Easy Ride Classic Madonna. This album was the basis of the Reinvention Tour! Love all these song especially "Nobody Knows Me." Mother And Father is another favorite of mine. Relaxed vocals but an important messages from the Queen herself! At first this album was a little hard to accept but with time, it has become like a fine wine. Every track is awesome and Madonna reveals her volunerability. Awesome! You will not be disappointed by this CD! Enjoy!
American Life [PA] [ECD] by Madonna (CD, Apr-2003, Warner Bros. Records Record Label) American Life [PA] [ECD] by Madonna (CD, Apr-2003, Warner Bros. Records Record Label) Great.
American Life has some great moments but overall it feels like a good idea that was poorly executed. Every time you think it's safe to let the music take you away something is thrown in that makes you cringe. I'm not here to tear the project apart, I was just disappointed and frustrated the first time I heard it. Unfortunately, it didn't grow on me much with time either. All Madonna fans should check it out but don't go into it expecting too much. 3 Stars.
Although most people did not like this CD and it did not do well in terms of sales, I would have to disagree with the general public. The CD is absolutely wonderful. The lyrics communicate pain, happiness, disappointment, but all are supported by well-chosen beats and rhythms. The music spans from guitar and piano to synthesizer and electronically generated sounds. If you are a fan of Madonna's later music, this is the one for you collection.
Great music!

She irreversably alienated half her fan base with the half-baked, uneducated theme of this cd but the music sure is terrific just like all her cds. The title track is too awkward (with stupid lyrics) but several other songs stand out to make this another innovative madonna record. The ballads Nothing Fails and Easy Ride are particularly enthralling.
