These cars were built from 1951 to 1963, during which time only one major change was made, namely the replacement of the bogies in the final stages of the Mark 1 construction cycle. The Mark 1 car, as it was later called, was designed as an "all-rounder" that combined the best features of the four large cars that the company had inherited. These carriages were in use in one form or another in the United Kingdom until 2010, when the Mark One-based Class 421 was withdrawn from service on the Lymington Branch Line.
