I can't say is if I remember much about this movie when I watched it when I was young because my mind couldn't grasp the concept of the movie but now as an adult I can comprehend it and appreciate a good movie made back years before my time. Song turned into a film.
This film is based on a song by Bobbie Gentry recorded in the 1960s. While the song kept you guessing about the characters, their motivations, and actions. The film delivers the full storyline. Weather Bobbie Gentry was behind the film's plot or not, the details in film make sense as to what and why things happened.So I was glad to see the idea fleshed out. Details of the setting, and regional integrity are preserved in the film. I remember radio stations asked listeners what Billy Joe was throwing off the bridge, and got a lot of opinions, nothing was confirmed until the film was made. In this very compelling movie - not a dull moment - ROBBY BENSON, the voice of THE BEAST in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, Disney's Animated treasure, is full of energy, and his boyish charm is irresistible. His romance with the neighbor's daughter (GLYNNIS O'CONNOR) is wonderfully refreshing and energetic. They are explosive together. But neither Billy Joe nor his girlfriend knows that he is gay, and spends the night with a local man, and is so ashamed in his girlfriend's eyes. He tries desperately to regain their passion, but alas... CANNOT. He tells her what he has done with the local man - that he has slept with a man - and she tries to understand and comfort him. He goes off to be alone and think about everything. He disappears. Two days later, he is dragged from the river bottom - dead. Included is, of course, the haunting and moving song from the 70's songstress: BOBBIE GENTRY singing ODE TO BILLY JOE, which was popular on the radio in that era. Get the tissues out.
