This is a great lens and well worth it. I took a pic the other night in complete darkness with an SB600 on a D80 using this lens and it was in perfect focus. I've printed pics up to A4 with stuff I've taken using this lens and they're absolutely crystal clear. I liked the lens so much, I recommended it to my sister and bought her one for her 40th. Can only say that the reviews I read prior to purchase held true for me, all positive. Far from a cheap generic name lens from the results I've achieved... Well done Tokina. Darren
I love this lens. I was previously using a Sony 11-18mm DT lens on my Sony A77, but was disappointed with lens flare. I changed to this lens, and virtually no flare even when pointed directly into the sun. And, so pin sharp it's scary! It is incredibly well built and performs perfectly on my A77. Definitely a keeper, and the f2.8 makes low light hand held a real breeze. Avoid using the lens hood if using the on-camera flash as it will cause shadows, but no problems without the lens shade, or using a clip on flash. The colours this lens produces are superb and so vibrant. Really pleased and no adverse comments at all on the lens. I hope to enjoy it for years to come.
The box the lens was is was badly damaged like it had been dropped but the lens appears to be working fine. It was posted out to me quickly and is an awesome lens for a beginner. I defiantly recommend this lens.
This solidly built lens delivers stunning sharpness throughout its range, it is quite capable of being used sucessfully wide open, and it's not fearfull of some sunlight in the front. Constant aperture of f2.8 across the zoom range is a real advantage. It also feels great; smooth and precise. For Nikon users, it also focuses in the same direction! I personally find the build quality up to or exceeding the current crop of Nikon lenses, but I have been spoiled by the feel of the traditional manual lenses. It has become an 'on the camera all the time' favourite for me, as I have always enjoyed the intimacy and perspective of wide angle lenses. Some have criticised the limited zoom range, but I always equate shorter zoom ratios with higher quality results, and this lens proves that argument. It has no perceptible weak spots anywhere in its range, and that is a rare commodity. Personally I consider that I have a great 12mm lens with some adjustment on either side, and that is how I use it. Optically, the great feature for me is that the sharpness extends across the aperture range, starting with strong figures wide open, with a peak at f4 to f5.6 and a useful range up to f11. Also, the even spread of sharpness over the whole frame is most gratifying. The sharpness is marginally less at 16mm, but still very good. There is a stronger tendency to suffer from chromatic abberations than other brands, but its not excessive to my eye, particularly in light of its excellent results otherwise, and its easy enough to correct later. My only real criticism of the Tokina is in the focus area. Firstly, my example needed a fistful of auto offset correction in the camera menu (-18 on D7000) to focus accurately, so it may be a problem for cameras that do not have this option. Also, the focus scale seems to be out (way past infinity for distant shots). Having said all that, with the adjustment made it reliably and consistently auto focuses accurately. My second little grizzle is that swithing between auto and manual focus is rather 'clunky' with the push-pull clutch arrangement, but once it is in manual focus it's a dream to use. Because I tend to use manual focus more than auto, this is an important feature for me. In summary, this a great lens, and can step right up to the plate for professional work. I have found it to reliably deliver brilliant results in a wide range of conditions. Thoroughly recommended.Read full review
This lens was recommended to me by a friend and I am not disappointed! Great value for money. I have found some chromatic aberration and slight distortion in my images but both these problems are easily fixed in post editing. The lens feels solid and is quiet in operation with quick focusing. Having a lens hood included is an added bonus. Not having image stabilization is a bit disappointing but I mostly use a tripod. Overall I am very pleased with this purchase.
