John Kennedy Toole's hero, one Ignatius J. Reilly, is "huge, obese, fractious, fastidious, a latter-day Gargantua, a Don Quixote of the French Quarter. His story bursts with wholly original characters, denizens of New Orleans' lower depths, incredibly true-to-life dialogue, and the zaniest series of high and low comic adventures" (Henry Kisor, Chicago Sun-Times )., A Confederacy of Dunces is an American comic masterpiece. This book is beyond funny. Though I rarely read novels, this is the exception. It is pure entertainment.

    Not so much.

For decades I"ve wanted to read this book. I am now a little over 1/2 through it. Honestly, I don't like it. Maybe if I had been reading it 20 or 30 years ago I would have liked it more. I don't think the author likes ant\y of his characters. Who could like the principal one. MAYBE the last 1/2 will change my mind. Physically, the book arrived in great shape & I'm grateful to have it to read.

  • I laughed til I cried and my sides hurt!

Marvelously written. Deserved the Pulitzer’s Prize that it won. Ignatius J. Reilly is a dysfunctional, pitiable oaf. Who somehow manages to bumble through life on his own terms ...... sort of. His eccentric follies remind us of at least ONE memorable character we are certain we have encountered at least once in our lifetime. This book will make you smile and laugh out loud time and time again.

  • One of the best books of all time!

One of the smartest books ever written. I read this 20 years ago and ordered it to have it again as an older adult. Such a great story and wonderful characters that are unforgettable. Funny to read, but written in a way that makes you stop and think.

  • Not worth the money as a piece of literature.

Laborious writing, hard to get into the story, American slang hard to understand, characters you can't empathise with. I gave up after a while it was not my kind of a story. Why it got a Pullitsor prize I do not know. I'm sorry I spent so much money on this book.

  • Hilarious

Too bad this eccentric and obviously gifted author's self-shortened life allowed just a peek into his literary genius...
