The Ernie Ball Music Man "StingRay" bass is a modern classic. They have been around for 30 years and have been consistently great instruments. They are generally not cheap but they are not cheaply made either. They are American made in San Obispo (SIC) California. They were one of the first instruments to feature active electronics. If you are looking for an instrument to play Funk - especially "Slap and Pop" style bass, you cannot go wrong with a "stingRay" or a Fender Jazz bass. They also have a great sound played with a pick for alternative music. The instrument may also be suitable for Motown music as well. This is not to say that the instrument is not versatile but rather that it is particularly suited for these styles. If you are looking for a classic sounding bass to play 60's tunes, you are better off with a Gibson. The neck of the instrument is average width. Not thin like a Jazz bass but not fat either. The standard on pickup Stingray has Bass, Mid and Treble controls and a volume control. It is not a light bass and is a bit on the heavy side. This surely contributes to its solid tone. I bought this instrement because I saw a bass player playing one a couple of years ago and was impressed with how good it sounded. I also wanted a bass to use specifically for "Slap and Pop" and funk. I have not been disappointed. The cheapest new "Stingray" that I was able to find from a dealer was $1299. If you can find one in good shape for less than a grand, it is a good deal. The one I bought was 10 years and had been well maintained. However, the instruments are built to last and you can pretty much buy a used one with confidence. There are a variety of finishes, gold hardware, and pickguards to choose from. it is also possible to get a matching headstock - painted the same color as the bass - which looks pretty sharp. In closing, this is a bass for the ages. You can buy one and count on keeping it in your collection forever. and...If in the sad event you have to sell it, it will not go up in value like a Gibson may, but It will always be worth $700 - $1000 if well maintained. If you are looking for a modern sounding bass, the Music man "stingray" bass will not disappoint. I am an active player and have been playing for 30 years. i intend to put some "Miles" on this one! This is a great piece of kit. I'm a novice student of the bass but have been doing a lot of research. This was a big purchase (to me) and will enjoy this for years to come. I am extremely pleased with the finish, feel and overall quality of this American-made instrument. As my skill level improves, I will learn more of it's special features. Two Bass thumbs up!

Great tone and action. My seller set it up perfectly. I own or have owned about six Stingrays. They are all great basses. Never played a bad one. This one though seems better than most. Super fast low action on the strings.

This is the sexiest bass guitar I've ever owned. Love the natural punchy growl and low rumble that this five string Stingray boasts, along with the stylish paint job and smooth fast neck. Stays in tune and the resonance and sustain is strong across the fretboard. Solid beast. 10/10.
