"The Night Watch" is a new book by Sarah Waters, whose previous fiction as been set in Victorian England. This book is set in 1940's London and has four central characters: Kay, Helen, Vivian, and Duncan. By focusing so closely on the lives of so few characters, Waters conveys the claustrophobia that London residents felt during WWII, which is interesting. Also interesting and effective is telling the story in reverse order. But, in the end, my reaction to "The Night Watch" was intellectual only. Despite of how much I wanted to love this book, it failed to capture my heart.
