  • Hook - Robin Williams, Bob Hoskins

Fantastic fantasy, my favorite film adaptation of the Peter Pan story to date, or rather it's an imaginative continuation. I saw it when it released as a kid with my fam. It blew me away then, and I've been a fan every since. And I wanted my first 4k disc purchase to be this one. I had hoped that it would be super crispy and clear, amazing audio, etc. I was somewhat let down, but after reading reviews I understand that it was shot on 35mm film, which is grainy, and all that 'wonderful' grain is still present. I'm still learning to appreciate that aspect, I guess. From scene to scene the grain is not very consistent, and there's a sort of haze over the picture, which may have been done on purpose for the sake of the the dream like telling of the story. Scene to scene, the quality does change a bit, like the director really wasn't concerned with continuity. It's still a great picture, and no doubt the best I've seen it since having viewed it in theater upon release. The audio is very good also, but I feel it could have been a bit better remastered. I don't know however if I'd feel like I was missing out on much if I had only bought the Bluray version. I'm starting to th think that way about a lot of films. Or that a digital 4k version would have sufficed rather than spending the extra money on a hard copy. Ive noticed that both Bluray and 4k are coming to market, and then quickly becoming scarce and expensive. I do believe the film industry is rushing (more) rapidly to all-digital and streaming, creating scarcity by not rereleasing even very well known films on disc but once, causing the disc market to collapse. It's an unhappy occurrence. The quality of 4k discs could be more outstanding than their 4k digital counterparts, but perhaps most people don't care, vs cost and convenience. I absolutely don't mind putting a disc in a player if it's more stunning a picture and incredible audio. Just look at 4k Laurence of Arabia. Man, that's an incredible film in 4k, they really outdid themselves remastering it. I wish they'd give that treatment to all 4k, but sadly they do not. Many 4k I've seen look fairly identical to the Bluray, especially ones by Warner Bros. I believe WB (not to be confused with their other, much better studio, WB Archives) is ordinarily lazy and just churning films out willy nilly.

Robin Williams was made for the role of the boy who never grew up. Of course in this movie he does and he has remember who is is and why he was. Love this movie and I miss Robin Williams.
