About this product

Product Information

Hot-tempered, self-centered, part-Irish Southern beauty Scarlett O'Hara, played to the teeth by Vivien Leigh, loves the gentlemanly Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard). Smug, rebellious, honest, blockade-running profiteer Rhett Butler, portrayed gracefully and naturally by Clark Gable, loves Scarlett. Ashley, who is also in love with Scarlett, marries his genteel cousin Melanie (Olivia de Havilland) because he believes that their quiet similarities will create a better marriage than Scarlett's passion. Meanwhile, sparks fly between Rhett and Scarlett at their first encounter and continue throughout Scarlett's first two marriages. Scarlett and Rhett finally wed, but Scarlett continues to pine for her beloved Ashley. Set against the Civil War and Southern Reconstruction, this tragic love quadrangle offers the burning of Atlanta and fields of wounded Confederates as part of its lush scenery. Meticulous backdrops, glorious sunsets, numerous silhouettes, and the ultrasaturated Technicolor film create a hyperreal vision. The romantic score is every bit as lush and dramatic as the photography, borrowing folk melodies from the Old South to make the tragic war concrete. Heavy nostalgic tones pervade the often witty dialogue and larger-than-life charms and faults of the leads. GONE WITH THE WIND stands among the greatest epic dramas ever filmed.

I am always taken by surprise at the outstanding opportunities afforded me on ebay. Remarkably, this movie is available on blu ray for a song despite being one of the most powerful dramas ever captured on film. It is unquestionably my all time favorite movie. For it's day a groundbreaking event in cinematography with each scene carefully constructed and flawlessly executed. Scarlett, Rhett, Melanie, Ashley, Mamie are the most memorable characters in a century of outstanding films. Each and every scene is unique in it's own way. A monument to David O. Selznick, a brilliant giant in the industry. From the grand estates of Tara and Twelve Oaks to the burning of Atlanta the overwhelming, sweeping, visceral power of life that will not be denied lies at it's emotional core. The characters are infinitely larger than life with the greatest of them being Scarlett. She is a woman to be reckoned with and only Clark Gable, with just the right amount of swagger, indisputable bravado, and wry smile could have filled the role of Rhett to Vivian Leigh's Scarlett. A lesser man would have been completely eclipsed by Leigh's supreme being performance. Juxtaposed are the performances of Olivia de Havilland and Leslie Howard. At first glance they seem weaker and much more susceptible to being eviscerated by Scarlett but character, morality, and goodness prevail and speak volumes of the outstanding performance quality these actors bring to their respective roles. Hattie McDaniel's Mamie has just the right amount of righteous indignation and humor to break up the serious horrible and terrible and defied all the odds by winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. In another age she would have continued in a brilliant, successful film career. Unfortunately, she was decades ahead of her time. Still, we are blessed with a unique opportunity to share in her irascible charm. This is a film that can be viewed on a 32" or 70" screen with just as much impact for it draws you into the polite, by gone age of genteel life and impeccable manners, truth notwithstanding and will not be enjoyed by those who demand political correctness in all things. It is what it is. Let it be. As time passes and memories fade, Gone With The Wind will forever remain one of the greatest, if not the greatest, film ever made.

  • The perfect edition of the prefect ADDITION to your film collection!

This is the truly penultimate edition of this classic war/romance film! My Mother attended the premier in Atlanta in 1939, and I still have her program from the night that is autographed by Vivien Leigh, Olivia de Havilland, Clark Gable and Margaret Mitchell. I was raised with this movie and book, always being a part of at least one conversation per week. I hold this movie dear to my heart, and you will too once you see it in its full grandeur! The bonus double sided DVD, with the MGM Studios documentary, "When the Lion Roared" is just a prefect addition to the package.
