Using VC-20 to record interviews from camcorder direct to DVD for archival purposes. Standard picture quality and 4:3 aspect ratio, but the unit does what it claims to do. Solid construction, so I expect it to last a good while. I tried to use DV input, but that doesn't work for live recording. I'm using composite inputs, but will try S-video for better quality. No complaints - good price, good quality, good seller.

Sorry, but I can not be anywhere as positive about the Sony VRD-VC20 as some as the other Ebay reviewers and apparently I am not alone. The reviews on a major online retailer’s website have the 5 star rating at 31% while the one star rating is at 39%. Two problems here. First these units represent 13 year old technology and had a reputation as being flaky even when first introduced back in 2006. Secondly Sony seems intent on having an overly aggressive copy protection scheme which at times prohibits recording of clearly allowable material. On the recording side, I ran a test comparing the overall quality of the VRD-VC20 in USB mode against the Asus burner in my computer. Using HP DVD-R discs the Asus yielded a Nero Speed Test rating of 90 while the Sony unit was only at 40. Despite all the inherent problems I can certainly understand the attraction of these units. There is very little in the way stand alone DVD recorders available in current product offerings. My only advice would be to make sure that your unit is returnable and/or you have purchased a separate Square Trade policy in case things don’t work out for you. Read full review

If you are looking to record to a DVD from a camcorder without doing editing this is what you want. Unlike a recorder/player that requires you to work thru a complex menu to set up this is very simple just connect to your camcorder then select just a couple of options and you are good to go . Very simple exactly what is need if trying to get videos from older hi 8 or compact disc recorders onto a DVD,

I was in doubt about an older (but new) recorder; my worries were unfounded. This is a very basic but easy to use unit which does all I need done. This unit is much easier to master and use than my JVC VCR/DVD recorder.

Very compact stand alone or use with your camcorder or computer! Many options and simple to use! Store those old home videos on DVD now a lot easier than going through VHS tapes.

this item may or may not work when I tried to use it. it had an issue with reading and finalizing discs. I just wish it would let me know before I waste real time loading videos on this item and then giving me a finalize error message making the disc useless. and my time wasted
