When these variants occur in comics, as they do for Crisis #1, the variant comic is still a 1st printing, still manufactured at the same place and the same time as all the other types of copies, and when you look on the CGC census for any one of these variants that I’ve ever collected, you’ll find they are the only other variant grouped together with the census entry for the regular copies in the 1st print census entry where they are denoted Canadian Edition. And although intended for newsstands in Canada the distribution was imperfect and some US collectors in border states bought cover price variants right in their own home towns. The rarity difference is enormous, simply because by population Canada only represented 9.8% of the North American market for comic books, and then the variants were only the newsstand portion of that market, which should have been roughly half in the year Crisis #1 was produced, based on distribution numbers revealed by industry insiders. So therefore effectively 4.9% of copies are these variants (so we can call them "1-in-20" for original distribution rarity).Read full review
