I bought this amp for a band playing blues/punk/psychedelic originals. With the top boost and normal channels being able to be mixed this allows very high and musical distortion or can be blended back to sweet cleans with the unique Vox voicing. This is a loud gigging amp with great control over a wide range of tones (plus tremolo and reverb). For me the modern version of the AC30 is a bit grating on the ears so I set about some straightforward tweaks. Stock tubes are pretty average and I used the JJs instead. Weber do great aftermarket speakers for this amp (blue dogs and silver bells). For a more classic AC30 sound it can be easily modified with more vintage JMI-era capacitors from Sozo and an output transformer from Mercury Magnetics. Plenty of info on that sort of stuff on the web and yes it makes an incredible difference. I bought the separate head + cab version for two reasons: easier to carry (the combo weighs a tonne) and also enables use of more microphonic-prone tubes due to further separation from the speakers.Read full review
