About this product

Product Information

Following the earlier titles The Crippled Tree , A Mortal Flower , Birdless Summer and My House Has Two Doors , this book covers the years from 1979 to the end of 1991. The author looks back to Zhou Enlai and compares Deng Xiaoping, who has been in power since 1966. She recalls the televized public trial of the Gang of Four in 1981, takes tea with Prime Minister Li Pen and records personal interviews with ex-Red Guards and many individuals struggling against the rigidity of the old order. Central to this book is the tragedy of Tiananmen Square in June 1989 and Han Suyin, by meeting witnesses and discussing the event with intellectuals known to her, examines the reasons why it happened.
