I was given a copy of this book in 1980 & it changed my life. I have now been farming organically for 35 yrs. No chemicals, few purchased inputs, healthier food, higher sales. Fast forward to 2021, and I bought this for my daughter and now she's raising her own beautiful food for her family I own a shelf full of gardening and farming books but this one book is the best, most comprehensive, easy to understand, book for first time gardeners and a great reference for seasoned farmers. It is full of maps & charts for last & first frost times in all USA areas, what to plant when, length of time each seed needs to grow, seed starting, how & when to plant, spacing needed, how to control pests & plant diseases & what to do, structures to build, soil composition and amendments to improve your soil, location of your garden, growing in pots & tips for disabled, elders & children. Very good book, excellent idea for small space gardening or even if you have a large yard and are handicapped like me. Very easy to follow. Can even be done in 3 or 4 gallon plastic pots, which I also found on eBay. Extremely informative. I'm now back to gardening again and growing all the things I love. The hard copy from the publisher was offered to me for $39.95 through the mail. I found the identical book in soft cover for less than half price, as a BUY IT NOW on eBay. Both were the 2005 edition.
Has some very good ideas. I am starting out this year with one square and see how it goes. Should be a lot less work for more produce.

After my brother mentioned the Square Foot Gardening show on PBS, I started looking into the idea. First I used the internet, finding a lot of great sources, and then I tried to buy the book--but this being spring, it was hard to find! Thank goodness for ebay and half.com So far, so good! I've built my own 2 x 4 box, and when the rain finally goes away I hope to fill it with "Mel's Mix" and start my first real vegetable garden. I love that SFG makes everything sound so... possible!
Been doing the Square Foot Gardening method for well over 20 years since I bought my first copy of Mel's Square Foot Gardening book when it first came out. That's when I first learned about Mel's method way back then. My gardening plots varied in size over the years, with raised beds, 4 ft wide X 20 ft long, in my mini farm area of 125 ft long by 35 feet wide, about 25 years ago, to just a 10 ft X 30 foot area 8 years ago, to now doing senior citizens gardening with just 23 gallon plastic tubs for container gardening. Learned a lot from Mel's book and his gardening TV Shows. He taught me things Mom never taught me, and, I'm a 3rd generation gardner. No matter what size your garden area is, you should get plenty of veggies from each square foot when following Mel's instructions in this book. No matter if you have an older edition of this book or this newer edition, Mel's Square Foot Method of Gardening is great and worth giving a try if you haven't tried it to date...Read full review
