It seems the Bible-reading community has a longstanding regard for compact editions, if you pay heed to sales figures, giving them a special niche among customers whose needs vary with their "on-the-go," ambient milieu. I share this regard for portability even when propped up on a reading pillow, which is why I bought a surprisingly economical edition of the RSV Catholic edition, published by OUP. As to its outward appearance, the cloth binding is a handsome shade of blue and holds forth fine gilding on the spine and a Greek cross with eight golden rays on the front cover. Nice. Rejecting trends in contemporary publishing of Bibles, OUP (Oxford Univ. Press) has included a spacious ribbon to remind the reader where his or her last session ended. Beneath the covers you will be very pleased to find what is oft missing in compact editions of any version: presentation page and spaces for family history---baptism, first communion, confirmation, marriage, parents, siblings, grandparents, your children and grandchildren. Just prior to "baptism," there is a poignant icon of Christ the Teacher, the work of Br. Claude Lane, O.S.B. Tradition-minded Catholic readers will be delighted to read the rightly famed Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, Dei Verbum; while children [and not a few adults] will thank the Almighty Himself for a table of the names and order of OT and NT books, alike. These considerations will make OUP's RSV Catholic, compact edition a standout from its competition at Harper Collins, the latter publisher favoring the NRSV over and above the Vatican-approved RSV. Wherever you paginate, the reader will observe a typeface that is precisely positioned and sharp of definition, which would prove ridiculously easy for those blessed with 20/20 vision. My sole criticism is for those less fortunate among us---would that the font were a shade darker for aged eyes like mine. By all means shall I recommend this outstanding compact Bible to my fellows in the faith.Read full review
