This was a marvelous melding of fact and fiction on a subject dear to those of us who are interested in the last of the ruling Romanovs ~ whether any of them survived the horrendous events at Yekaterinburg. Since at this point in time, there were never any bones found for Alexei and Anastasia, this wonderful roller-coaster of a story gives us one potential possiblity. Exciting, suspenseful, fascinating! I didn't want to put it down til I was finished! Well-written, states true historical fact as fact, great research by the author, suprising plot twists, completely captivating! Most highly recommended for historical and/or suspense/thriller fans!
This book had a great plot, intriguing characters, and when it moved it had some great action sequences. My complaint is that the book was too darned long. Normally I love a nice long book, but this was filled with useless detail that really slowed the pace of the story. A good editor could have reduced the length of the book by at least one third and still kept the interesting historical background and political intrigue. At one point, I really considered just abandoning the book because I just didn't think it would be worth it to continue. A friend told me they had started it and just gave it up because it was so slow, so I am not the only one who had this impression.
Let me just say that I know nothing about Russia (except what I wrote in a report for 4th grade), yet this book was wonderful. Even with all the history, the backstory, the politics, Steve Berry pulls off a wonderful thriller. I have become very interested in the history of the Romanovs and Russia since finishing this book a few weeks ago. I have become a permanent fan of Steve Berry; I have read his 2 of his other works (3rd Secret, Templar Legacy) and can't wait to read The Amber Room. If you like historical thrillers, even if you know nothing about Russia and the Romanovs, READ THIS BOOK!
I really love Steve Berry's novels. I got hooked on them a few months ago and have now read four of the five he's written so far. He has a perfect blend of history and mystery and always keeps you wanting to read more. I knew nothing of Russian history and I like the fact I can learn about their culture and still have a mystery going on at the same time. It's especially nice that he tells you at the end of each book what parts are fiction and what are historical facts. I would highly recommend this and his other books if you have any interest in history and or thrillers. It is a highly entertaining book.
There is tonnes of history involved when explaining the storyline in the Romanov Prophecy. I read this book about 8 months ago and have recently bought more Steve Berry novels because of it. Well worth a read. Especially if you find Russia interesting (which I didn't before the novel). As you can imagine it is about the Tsarist family (the Romanov's) that was murdered before communist rule. Set in present day, but there is a secret about the past that is just waiting to be discovered. Enjoy!
