I decided to check out Outliers after a well respected friend quoted it (he was a lovely professor named Bob who was doing the dishes) I thoroughly enjoyed Gladwell's "Blink" so I thought I'd bring Outliers with me on holiday. Gladwell's storytelling style is easy to understand without watering down the content too much. He is honest, personal and I also would say humble. The story of how people end up being successful through hard work and fortuitous circumstances rather than innate specialness provides wonderful insight into our true nature and potential. Compared to Blink, the content of Outliers is a little on the dry side, and the content significantly less revelatory. Gladwell's clever and witty style shines through often but in some factors is overshadowed by facts and figures. Despite a few flaws in the presentation, Gladwell unveils a fascinating and revealing insight into humaness in a way that's easy to understand. I'm only halfway through the book, reading a bit at a time as opportunity provides, but I must say I enjoy picking it up to continue reading. So far I've read no world-changing information, but quite often I've found myself thinking how interesting the small revelations are, and, as a well;-read autodidact,why the heck didn't I notice these things previously. The author has made a lot of things more interesting than I would have thought they were, made me look anew at things I thought I already knew enough about......I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the book....and yes, I will likely buy other books by this author. He's seeing things most of us would never notice, like very early in the book how many top people in their fields were all born at similar times of the year. That's weird....then he explains why, and you find yourself amused but in total agreement of his reasoning.Read full review
