A Good Book to Start With
If you're looking for a pretty good book that really examines a wide range of physical phenomena, then this is really something you should look into. As the title says, it's "Gravity from the Ground Up," and it covers everything from falling-body motion to black holes, gravity waves, gravitational lensing, the Big Bang, neutron stars, and many other interesting topics. The author explores everything in-depth, using mathematics as a tool to guide your observations. Interestingly enough, though, the math isn't essential; you could read the entire book through, grasp everything Schutz is trying to convey, and not make a single calculation. The math behind the text is almost entirely set aside in boxes outside the main text (there are a few situations where math is included, but they're really simple and don't really use numbers, only words). In these boxes, he guides you through the calculation, gives some examples you can do yourself, and then provides the answers to your do-it-yourself calculations online. Furthermore, he makes available a powerful computing program that you can make graphs and analyze data (provided in the book - or, if you're really adventurous, find your own) with on your own computer. From this, it's possible to make some pretty accurate calculations and visual supplements, and perhaps even pick up some programming ability along the way. I'm extremely pleased with this text. It really is a textbook, replete with math, but it reads like a book you'd find written by Michio Kaku or Hawking. I would highly recommend this book to both beginning physics students and armchair enthusiasts.Read full review
