This is the fourth time I purchased this book because I keep giving it away for others to read. I have read all of the Incarnations of Immortality at least 6 times...the first time back in 1990...before my daughter was born. She has now read the entire series more than that! To see that death is an office held by a person made me much less scared of death.

On a Pale Horse is the first in the Incarnations of Immortality series by Piers Anthony (author of blue adept and Xanth series) This book was the one that roped me in for the whole 7 book seires. It is about death, THantos, the grim reaper. It, like all the books, helped me love the character and understand, in Anthony's eyes, a new a interesting way to view the traditional incarnations. (death, fate, time, war, mother earth, satan, and god)It starts off with a man who finds himself suddenly holding the office of death, then throughout the book comming to terms with his passing mortality and that of everyone else. Along the way he learns the story of god, satan, and eternity and his role in the selection of the two. In the book he has to make choices to save a potential thwart of satan. The way Anthony gave Thantos a heart and had him keep his human emotions throughout his rein kept me entraced and searching for the next book. It was an absolute delight to later read the books and pick out scenes and encounters from this first character. Thantos becomes your buddy, and his pale horse.. hehe the wonderous creature that it is, stands by as the companion. Anthony does it again. His wit and imagery take you into the world he paints for you to dance in. EnjoyRead full review
Piers Anthony brings the wit and humor of his previous light fantasy series to the more serious matters of death, politics, society, religion, and paradox. This book begins his Incarnations of Immortality series. It is a bit more serious than his Apprentice Adept series, and a great deal more serious than his Xanth series. Each of the novels in this series represents the story of a different incarnation; Death, Time, Fate, War, Nature, Evil, Good, and Night. He is an excellent author that has produced a plethora of novels of which I believe there is a little something for everyone, no matter their genre preferences.
I read this series years ago and purchased this set as a gift. I remember it was hard to get into it at first ... but was told to keep going. I did and completely enjoyed it. I had never read this genre of book before but was sad when the last book ended.
