'Seeing comes before words. The child looks and recognizes before it can speak.' 'But there is also ather sense in which seeing comes before words. The relation between what we see and what we kw is never settled.' John Berger's Ways of Seeing is one of the most stimulating and influential books on art in any language. Most relevant reviews

  • Brilliant

A thought provoking analysis of the old masters and their relationship with relatively contemporary 'art'. The viewpoint is relatively left-wing, but that very fact makes this an interesting read from a sociological perspective and it says a lot about about the culture in which painters worked compared to today's cultural world which is awash with digital images.
