Always interesting to see the origins of a character that has achieved world status. The first two Tintin stories reproduced in a smaller format but with no loss of detail - the first is in black and white and deals with Tintin's adventures [aided by some Deus ex machina] in the Soviet Union in 1929. This was Herge's first TinTIn comic and appeared in a conservative Catholic magazine and was a trenchant criticism of that country much of it acutely observed. The second Story Tintin in the Congo is an update of the original, in colour, and makes that Belgian colony less patronising although the native's appearance is a stereotyped one. and wouldn't be drawn that way now. With these reservatons the book is an excellent introduction and you can see in relation to later Tintin comic books the devlopment of his ligne clear style. Herge was later to free himself of the d-editorial line when he developed his own studio - but these earltyb stories are interesting in showing Tintin's origins and development. Oh and Sniowy [Milou] played a helpful role at times. Captain Haddock does not appear until much later in the series.Read full review
