I installed this processor in about 5 minutes and windows identified everything automatically! no bios update required and it works perfectly. Benchmarked against amd phenom II x4 945 and it was identical! it is a viable upgrade for an older computer and multitasks very well. upgraded from a Athlon II x4 620 and it is much faster. Temps run 28 C on idle. It is an older cpu but for my use it is a very good upgrade.

The Athlon II quad core is a marvelous little processor that is still very applicable today. All the games and software I use run fairly smoothly with this little wonder. And it's 2017 now. I expect this CPU will be in use for at least 3 more years before it seems too slow for what I do. You shouldn't expect it to run the latest games at UHD resolutions with ultra presets. But it can run the latest games at 720p on low to medium presets at, or near 60 FPS. Other software runs at decent speeds too. For the price I highly recommend The Athlon II X4 640.

A great value for anyone who needs an inexpensive quad-core CPU. Although the Athlons are not the equal of the Phenoms from the same time period (Phenom = higher IPC and L3 cache lacking in Athlon), they are still decent CPUs and can usually be had for half the price. Roughly 80% of the overall performance of Phenoms and about 50% of the cost at current eBay prices. Athlons do have a few factors in their favor - Lower TDP and better heat tolerance, as well as gaming performance that is much closer, only about 5% or less difference in gaming benchmarks. Tons of new mobos still available that will socket this processor. Good for daily-use systems where extra cores are desirable but cost is a concern or for entry-level budget gaming rigs. Combine with an AM3+ 970 board, 8GB DDR3 1600 and an NVidia GTX 750ti or Radeon R7 260X video card for an inexpensive gaming setup that will play nearly anything with decent res and playable frame rates. In this scenario, upgrade to Phenom or FX and upgrade GPU when you're ready without changing boardsRead full review
Reliable workhorse CPU for socket AM3 systems. I'm a cheapskate. I upgrade my gaming PC when I find a title that piques my interest and not before. Add this CPU to a system with a semi-modern graphics card and you've got a great system for just about any PC related purpose. Still strong enough to run modern games at lower resolutions/settings and more than enough power for web related activities.

These make a great basis for a budget small-business or gaming PC. They have enough power for multitasking, overclock well and will run for years. Although performance is not equal to the Phenoms, it's really close - less than 5% difference between this CPU and the Phenom II X4 840, and the Athlon actually beats the Phenom in memory-intensive applications. Plus, these can generally be had for half the price of a comparable Phenom, making them an excellent value.
Couldn't ask for a better option to give new life to an old computer. Previously had a dual core in my home media server. The quad core made a significant improvement in loading times for basic tasks. The processor looked great when I received it. No bent pins, no leftover thermal paste. Threw it in and it fired up without a hitch. Couldn't be happier.

I've owned the 640 for quite a while, must been at least 6 years and it's been a fantastic run. Right to the details, running this thing with a hyper 212 (quality large air cooler) this thing EASILY breaks into the 3600Mhz range for overclocking. This is on an Asus board (SB 950 chipset), 450W PS and Asus AI Suite II 2.04.01 (other versions of AI Suite were unstable in and of themselves.) This thing could run 3650Mhz-ish all day long, literally pegged using Folding@Home. Of course each die is different, maybe I was just very lucky. If you find a good price on this you won't be let down.

I was using a single CPU and the computer was so slow. By changing it to a quad it went from a Edsel to something with some power

Made it to Denver Colorado in 10 days from S. Korea. Super reliable for my movie computer. Was an upgrade from the previous CPU the pc had. CPU was in great shape and clocked well. Thank you again.
