Current slide {CURRENT_SLIDE} of {TOTAL_SLIDES}- Best Selling in Oscilloscopes & Vectorscopes
I was cruising Tek scopes on Ebay for no good reason when I spied the TDS 540C 500MHz Digital Oscilloscope with a bid price of $450. For a four channel digital oscilloscope, I figured that was a pretty darned good price, since 4-channel analogues will go for $400+. So hey, why not? However, at the same time as I submitted a winning bid, I also saw a TDS 820 that was in need of repair. I found the Service Manual for the TDS 820 online, and figured out fairly quickly what the typical repair parts would be to fix it. The TDS series is no longer supported by Tek. I contacted a company that services Tek scopes and inquired about possibly getting the TDS 820 repaired. They replied that repair parts were depleted (something that I had already discovered from Tektronix) and that "all the TDS series suffer from these boards [going bad]" Oh? Whoops!! Guess I needed that extra bit of research before bidding. Well, I can say that my TDS 540C is a nifty instrument and very easy to use - while it lasts. 5 stars for simplicity, ease of use, and functionality, but minus one star for dismal prospects. This thing will die someday, and I will be sad.Read full review

Pros: Great oscilloscope many measures to work with even with pass calibration remain is accurate Cons: Bad capacitor will damage track and IC need to be re-cap every few years

This scope came, and I was able to turn it on and look at what it offered with respect to options. I was very happy. Unfortunately, the front end gave out for some unknown reason. Something which I can honestly say was not the fault of the sender. I troubleshot it with the Tek service manuals (which were available online), and after I got to the end of what would be reasonable for a small shop to complete, he graciously accepted the return. I am going to miss this unit.
