I am an almost daily sew-er and I used my original machine for 17 years before it needed serviced beyond my capabilities, and before that it was my moms, and before that it was her Aunts. I loved it so much that I HAD to purchase this one as a backup machine because the brand new one I went to the store and bought to use while mine was in the shop was CRAP. If you can find one for a price you can afford, do not let it slip past you.

This machine is great and it came with all the accessories except the carrying case. However the machine was seized up and had to be serviced to get it working. Once it was serviced though it worked well and is an excellent machine. My sister is thrilled that I bought it for her.

The Singer 431g, made in Germany in 1964/65 is one of the finest and rarest sewing machines ever made. Never imported into the U.S. It was the just the 3rd "free-arm made by Singer. It is the "Cadillac" of the 400 Series. Very quite when sewing and it always makes a perfect stitch. It is very easy to maintain. They don't come up for sale very often, but when they do, they are snapped up quickly by Singer collectors. They are expensive to buy, but if you like to sew, I would highly recommend this machine, as it will last many life times over. I purchased mine, as I do sew, but I am a long time Singer collector, over 30 years now. The only two draw-backs with this machine that I can think of is: they don't sew well using plastic bobbins and you don't achive a good looking stitch, if you use a 100% polyester thread. They sew best using cotton or cotton covered polyester thread and a metal bobbin. You can't help not to love everything this machine will do for you. As to compare this machine to others, there just isn't much to compare with. This is the top of the line in vintage Singer slant needle sewing machines.Read full review
These machines were built in the late 1950's through early 1960's and mine works like it is brand new. Very smooth machine. Very powerful. There is a slight learning curve but once you get comfortable with the machine it is very capable.

I really enjoy using my 401A Singer sewing machine. I bought it because I wanted to do decorative and zig zag stitching without depending on a computer powered machine. The drop-in cams are easy to use and allow me to choose the stitches I want. I also love the solid metal construction. I can't even imagine this machine being torn up beyond repair. It's heavy but not so heavy I can't move it. The stitching is uniform and even. Threading the machine is not difficult at all and using the double needles is a breeze. Give it a try. You'll love it too.
I purchased this machine from a sewing machine repair man. There was a video posted on youtube showing the working machine and the features. This machine was built in 1956 and is still in fabulous working order. It was refurbished and serviced to be in excellent shape. One of the best Singer machines made right here in America. I am very proud of my "new" machine and use it several times a week. It works great and is stronger than my other machines. I am a seamstress and purchased this to use a lot so it has to work for me. Very glad I purchased it. This came with a lot of the extra parts a seamstress would want and have had no problem locating additional parts online.
Singer 401A is a great sewing machine. It is easy and simple, sews great. I had already had another 401 and was very pleased with it, so I couldn't pass up the chance to purchase another. My first 401 had the attachments so now I am able to use them on both machines. The manual that comes with the machines explained all the parts and capabilities of the machine very well. It made for a delightful sewing experience without any complications. I would highly recommend this machine whether you are a beginner or have been sewing forever.
America made great products and the quality of this machine cannot not be expressed in words alone. This is a machine to last. Now the machines are made in China that are terrible I am happy I bought this machine and love product made in USA. This machine was well engineered and all metal not plastic junk Great workmanship and quality

There is no better machine anywhere. The presser foot is adjustable which means I can sew fabric as fine as chiffon to the heaviest denim and quilted and even real leather. Although it is a bit noisier than some of the new computerized ones, it is well worth the extra volume. The slant needle design allows a greater view of the stitching area and the light that is built-in is quite effective. I have one that is a "hand-me-down" from my mom. She regrets that she got swayed by the fanciness of the Singer 620. Hers has been in the shop so many times that she has paid more than double it's cost in repairs, mostly to the synthetic plastic/resin gear stack. I have been sewing on this machine since I was 11 years old with no problems and only basic maintenance. With the cabinet my dad paid over $600 in 1958 or 1959. This would equate to over $5,000 today and there are no home models that still have metal workings. Great valueRead full review
