I purchased this flash unit mainly to use as a TTL flash to go with my Nikon N90s film camera, but also as a non-TTL auto flash for use on my Lumix DMC-FZ30. The double flash head is a very clever idea, allowing one to bounce the main flash and still have some on-axis fill. Also good is the PC jack built into the AS-9 control foot. It's purpose is for using the flash off-camera, but can also be used to daisy-chain a second flash or a radio transmitter while the flash is on-camera! About the only "Gotcha" in my opinion is the lack of manual power ratio control. There are only two settings: Full-blast and 1/16 in the "Motor Drive" mode. Really this doesn't come as a surprise to me, as it's my understanding that when this flash was made only Sunpak flashes had manual power-ratio control out of the box. Of course the flip-side of that "gotcha" is that since the lack of power ratio control makes this flash less useful for "Strobist" style photography there may well be less competition for these flashes, keeping the prices lower. Adding it all up: Sure it's missing some of the fancy features of newer Nikon flashes. The exact details here are very dependent on your camera/flash/lens combo; the main feature missing is the ability to fire a pre-flash. Read your camera manual for the exact details... For on-camera TTL flash (or off-camera TTL with an appropriate TTL cord) it's great, and will work with pretty much any Nikon camera. Just don't get it confused with the SB-16A, which only fits a handful of older cameras...Read full review
I purchased the SB-16B flash to utilize w/ my older Nikon film cameras- F2, FA, F4, F5. TTL works great with the FA, F4, and F5. Having the extra front flash when bouncing the main does give a nice fill. But this flash does go thru batteries, especially when at max output. Works great w/ NiMh hi capacity batteries but not at all with the new lithiums. Is a bit large and heavy but it gives you TRUE 120 GN output at 100 ISO @35mm setting.
One of the best dedicated flash units I have ever used. This unit does great as it has two strobe heads in it so you get the diffused bounce flash in the primary by virtue of its articulation, yet the secondary does a nice flash “Fill-in" to keep shadowing and back lighting darkening to a minimum. I have been a photographer for over 38 years and it is my flash of choice. So take that Sun Pac and Vivitar at four and five times the money.
This part is the foot for the SB-16 speed light. The upper portion of the SB-16 is a paper weight without it. Having said that, it's like a refrigerator, essential but just another essential. I was startled to find out that what I thought was a complete SB-16 was without the foot. I wasn't terribly pleased with that discovery.

Great older flash that provides high light output at very low dollar outlay! Why pay hundreds more for buttons?
