I had been looking for a good sized zoom lens for my Canon Camera for some time. My 55 mm - 250 mm does a good job, but I needed something for longer range to add to my collection. The canon version of this lens is about $2,000 new. I didn't want to invest that much as this time. The tamron lens goes for about $1,000 and according to my local camera store, the salesperson said they are fairly close & the $1,000 extra didn't really warrant purchasing the Canon version. The next day a individual posted one on my local Craigslist and EBAY at the same time. I contacted him and purchased the unit (through EBAY for protection). So far I LOVE this lens. I have a hawk that sits around my house (just out of range with my old lens) and I am anxious for him to come back to photograph. I am also going to take it on some hiking trips to get photos of landscape, animals, etc. that I couldn't get with my old zoom lens. This Tamron doesn't have the IS on it, however it has everything else I am looking for. It was in A+ condition and I got it for an excellent price. I would highly recommend this lens (look around and compare apples to apples) and I think you would be pleased with this purchase as well. I couldn't wait to show fellow photographers after I received this item around Christmas time. The photos I have taken so far are excellent and make it worth every cent I paid. I already had 2 tripods to mount this on (as it is too heavy to hand hold and get clear photos). Mine came in the original box, with original paperwork and didn't have any cosmetic wear. I am also looking forward to another lunar eclipse of the moon (as it was overcast where I live on the one that took place on 12/21/10). I have no doubt I could get some excellent shots of the moon. Also I am looking forward to our next big fireworks show in my town to get some photos of that as well. Again, I LOVE this lens!!!Read full review
Purchased this lens used. It was not $5000 so my expectations were low.. I was pleasantly surprised. It has the potential to produce great images if you know what you are doing. Needs good light, a tripod and subjects that ae not moving at the speed of light. I purchased this lens at half its retail vallue so perhaps this makes me less critical..but I love the size and weight of this lens. It seems manageable to me as others were too heavy and cumbersome to carry around in the field. There is a learning curve on any 500mm lens so be patient if you get one.
Almost perfect as a long reach lens. There may be sharper lenses, but at a far higher price.

My lens was quite soft at f6.3 and much better stopped down to f8.

Inexpensive but a great telephoto. Sigma lenses are on heavy side. Nikon AF does not wprk with this lens if you do not have the AF motor in camera body. Sharp, fairly fast and great lense coatings. Excellent bang for buck.
A bit dark/slow. But oh well, if you really want a 500mm lens, then you have to live with these drawbacks. It's very huge (I mean really really huge) and quite heavy. Expect a big package to be dropped at your front door!
