Arguably the "best" compact 50mm lens ever made. Some modern lenses can match it for optical quality, but not optical AND mechanical AND compactness. You buy this lens because it is a thing of beauty and the epitome of lens-manufacturing. Yes the price, more than ten years after they stopped being made, is ridiculously high. But think of it as lifetime purchase.

A truly spectacular lens. I also own a bunch of modern Leica glass, including the 50mm Asph 1.4 6 bit (latest version) and I thought that maybe this 60 year old Summicron would pale in comparison. Not so. Still breathtakingly sharp, even wide open. Stopped down it just improves. The main difference is that is has softer contrast, and is more susceptible to flare. The build quality of these lenses is remarkable - nicer than the new Leica lenses. The only thing you have to do is make sure that you get one that is not damaged. The front element is apparently much softer than other lenses, so it can be damaged by careless cleaning. Beware of examples that have 'cleaning marks' or 'mild scratches'. That cannot be fixed. Mine had none, and the first thing I did was attach a protective filter. Bottom line, I bought this incredible real Leica lens for $500. My Summilux 1.4 cost $4000! A made in Japan Zeiss Cosina Planar costs $860 and it does not remotely compare in construction (I had one). You do not have to go broke to shoot gorgeous Leica lenses, just buy vintage.Read full review
The Leica Summicron not only looks right on the M camera, it sees very much the same as our eyes. The f2.0 lens allows enough light for all but the dimmest daylight situations. Picture quality is excellent. I would put this lens against any 50mm lens out there.
Fantastic color rendition and sharpness considering its age

Amazing lens. Almost the only one you need. Speed and sharpness at its best. It's heavy and large by Leica standards (esp. compared to my 28mm Elmarit) but it balances well on the M9 and it feels great in the hand.
Why I got it on ebay, best lens for 35mm in the world, and how it paints on film for natural lighting. No digital lens can be equal to it. The best on today's market in rare minerals glass making. Go with "Leica Vintage"!!!
