This version of A Christmas Carol has top line actors to give the story some weight and in that sense is a more "human" version of the tale and quite relatable. I'm not totally sure that George C Scott was the right actor for this role, he's a little too likeable, but carries it off well. One point which lets it down a little are the three ghosts - Marley isn't scary enough, there's a lady who looks like she stepped out of the punk era as the Past ghost, the Present ghost's laugh was a bit faked and the Future one not quite ominous enough. The sense of family life of this era is brought out very well in the scenes at Bob's house and the more wealthy, Fred. But if Fred's supposed to be poor, why does he have a servant and give his wife a gold bracelet? Having said that, all is forgiven with the awesome back drop of the winter village - this was actually filmed in Shrewsbury and is picture postcard perfect. I haven't watched the cartoon version of this yet - since it's a two disc set, but the quality of the live action film is very good.Read full review
