This is an excellent book that brings together a wide range of bear-human encounters. It is well written and researched, by a REAL Alaskan, (a native and high school teacher), with an obvious love of bears. Larry's book (as well as his 'follow-up' More Alaska Bear Tales) makes a well rounded, almost documentary style, compilation of the human experience with bears in Alaska. Alaska Bear Tales is also a great, short story read, for use as a bed-time book to read to your children in their bedroom or at the campfire in the woods. You can choose (or let your kids select) scary, gory, or fun/nice encounters, to match the child or the occasion. I am an ex-bear hunter/guide that used to require my inexperienced hunting clients to read Larry's book just to get my client's respect for the animal. After reading it I have had hunters completely change their attitude toward bears and even decide not to ever kill the animal. They have backed out of hunts for various reasons, from learning to love the species to having developed a healthy fear of the animal. I know Larry's books inside out and have read them many times over (never boring) and still use them in my work. I am a Team Leader (retired Army) at the Alaska Military Youth Academy, and like to read to my cadets at night after 'rack procedures'. When I'm not reading current events, and they have earned a treat, I let them choose the story they want and they always pick Alaska Bear Tales, (gory/scary-story of course). Alaska Bear Tales and More Alaska Bear Tales are two of my favorite and most utilized books! This book is a classic in its category and subject matter and should be considered a text book, a short story, true/fiction documentary of human tales. A must read!!!Read full review
We recently met Al and Joyce Thompson, survivors of a bear attack in Alaska in 1971. Such an amazing and terrifying story! Their story and determination to survive is truly inspirational. All the stories have been fascinating.

I love to hunt myself. I have never, nor do I have any interest, to hunt a grizzly bear. I had heard from a friend several years ago that this was an interesting book to read. I had a hard time putting this book down. I loved it. I also bought the next book(more alaska bear tales) too. So far, it is great also.
A book that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
