I bought this album to replace the cassette which I had in the late 80s. Marianne brought this album out in 1979, and it was a comeback after a long commercial absence, and is one of her most critically hailed albums. Marianne was a lot different in 1979 to what she is like on the rolling stones rock’n’roll circus ten years earlier. Her voice is a lot different and so are the lyrics. Marianne’s voice and lyrics really remind you of somebody from the school of hard knocks, especially on songs like working class hero and broken English. Working class hero is a song by john Lennon, and broken English is inspired by a book Marianne read about the baader-meinhof terrorists, and the lyrics seem relevant to the way things are in Europe now. This remastered version comes with a booklet, which tells the story of where Marianne was at in 1979. Steve Winwood plays keyboards on most of the songs, which gives the music a very modern sound. The last song “why’d ya do it” was banned in Australia when it first came out, and I do not think they will play it on the radio, today. One day I might get the following album “dangerous acquaintances” which sounds interesting. Read full review
