English summary: Christian Broda (1916-1987) is one of the most influential politicians of the Second Republic, having spent 19 years as head of the Austrian Ministry of Justice (1960-1966 and 1970-1983). His name comes up again and again in contemporary history. In Austria, he is particularly present in the context of legal reform during the Kreisky Era, outside of Austria he is primarily kwn for his fight for a worldwide ban of the death penalty. Nevertheless, for long time there was biography of Christian Broda in existence. The book by Maria Wirth provides the first detailed portrayal of Broda. It illuminates his life and his political work with the following focal points: legal policy, media policy, dealing with the Nazi past, and the struggle to protect human rights and abolish the death penalty. Maria Wirth zeichnet erstmals den Lebensweg Brodas und seine Tatigkeit als Politiker mit einem Fokus auf die Rechts-, Medien- und Demokratiepolitik, den Umgang mit der NS-Vergangenheit und die Menschenrechtspolitik nach. Zugleich wird Broda im Diskurs der Zweiten Republik verankert - war er doch sowohl wegen seiner Biographie, etwa seiner kommunistischen Jugend, als auch wegen seiner Politik, v. a. seiner Vision einer gefangnislosen Gesellschaft, immer wieder Gegenstand heftiger offentlicher und politischer Debatten.
