I’m no Clifford Brown fan-boy, but this album is great. Clifford’s beautiful tone is on full display as he guides us through a series of reading on standards, trailing a string section in his wake. Don’t expect trumpet pyrotechnics or long solos (or many solos at all). The string writing by Neal Hefti is good but patchy. All in all, it’s hard to listen to this album and not feel sad for a great trumpet player who only lived to 25.

This is Clifford Brown in his rhapsodic rather than bebop mode and, with the lush Neal Hefti arranged string accompaniment, the result is sublime.
