Jahrhunderts pragte, aber die meisten sind mit Vorsicht zu geniessen. Denn Mademoiselle, wie sie sich am liebsten nennen liess, war nicht nur eine geniale Stilistin, sondern auch eine begnadete Marchenerzahlerin. Je alter sie wurde, je weiter sie sich von ihren Anfangen entfernte, desto mehr neigte sie zur persoenlichen Legendenbildung. Die Chanel strich ihre beiden Bruder, die sie fur ihr Schweigen sogar bezahlte, aus ihrer Biographie. Sie verleugnete ihren ersten Liebhaber, der ihr den Zugang zu hoeheren Gesellschaftsschichten eroeffnet hatte. Sie frisierte die Geschichte ihrer Geburt und ihrer Kindheit. Als ihre Lebensgeschichte als Musical am Brodway inszeniert wurde, wunschte sie sich, es solle mit einer Szene beginnen, in der ihr Vater sich liebevoll uber ihre Wiege beugt und ihr den Spitznamen Coco gibt. Die Wirklichkeit sah anders aus. Coco Chanel revolutionierte nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg die Damenmode: Sie liess die Taillen herunterrutschen, brachte sportliche Sweater in Umlauf, machte den 'Bubikopf' beruhmt und das 'Kleine Schwarze'. Ihr Stil war schlicht, einfach und unspektakular. Selbst in den 50er Jahren hielt sie an ihrem Stil fest.
