Bujold is one of my favorite scifi/fantasy writers, and this book shows you why exactly that is! The story follows Chalion knight Lupe deCazaril who is attemting to recreate his life after being left in slavery following the fall of his fort years before. He finds himself as secretary of the Chalion royesse (princess), desperately helping her to navigate the intrigues and betrayal of the court. And did I mention the royal family's curse? He has to solve that, too! I enjoyed the story so much that I had to read the follow up story, Palladin of Souls.
Lois Mcmaster Bujold is best known for her immensely entertaining science fiction/spare opera series chronicling the adventures of Miles Vorkosigan. Now, she has created yet another universe (set in the realm of fantasy) with well developed characters and in engaging plot. The Curse of Chalion is a great place to start reading Bujold. The Curse of Chalion has all the elements that make for engrossing reading; A battered and down on his luck protagonist, a mysterious curse, political intrigue, strange and troubling magic, and just enough romance to tie it all together. From the first chapter you will be pulled into the story and completely satisfied by where it takes you.
I started reading Bujold's The Sharing Knife. I enjoyed it so much I searched for other stories written by her and found this treasure. I highly recommend it for those who like fantasy stories with a little bit of romance thrown in. Very interesting plot, and a fascinating main character.
