This book features the exciting athletic events of the original Eskimo Olympics which were held in Fairbanks, Alaska, beginning in 1961. Among these many and varied events were the blanket toss, Indian stick pull, ear pull, ear weight, body weight lifting, seal skimming, knuckle hop, high kick, and muktuk eating. These contests challenge the participants' pain endurance, balance skills and agility, or are associated with skills needed for hunting and whaling. Other events test participants' brute strength that is needed to haul seals and other animals through holes in the ice. This book will assist young readers to develop an understanding and appreciation for the native people and some of their games and athletic contests. Beyond this, it will help them develop an understanding of the athletic contests themselves and what is involved in performing each feat.
