Additional information
Folila is Amadou & Mariam's first album of new studio material since 2008's international hit Welcome to Mali. Mali's first couple in music is once again produced by Marc-Antoine Moreau, who has worked with the pair for the entirety of their musical career. The album's basic tracks were recorded in New York and recut in Bamako. The best tracks were chosen from each location. Several guests appear on the set, including countryman Bassekou Kouyate on ngoni, rapper Theophilus London, Nick Zinner (of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and TV on the Radio.
Reviews
Rolling Stone (p.82) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Africa's great husband-wife duo bring their trance vocals and shredding guitar grooves to Brooklyn..." Entertainment Weekly (p.82) - "Though they sing in different languages, the tongue of teamwork makes for universal understanding -- especially on the spry, haunting 'Wily Kataso.'" -- Grade: A- Uncut (p.65) - "French rocker Bertrand Cantat contributes guitar squalls, NYC hip-hopper Theophilus London raps against the grain, and even desert blueser Abdallah Oumbadougou is lost in the sound blitz." Mojo (Publisher) (p.93) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he Tuareg Abdalla Oumbadougou delivers the goods on 'Bagnale,' by a distance the highlight."
