Used Garmin GPS units for many years now. On par, the 64s is Reliable, it Has to be considering the places I go. Taken drops on solid rock and just keeps going. The 64s has Numerous features that have Real Use and not gimmick. ie bearing direction, 'go to' functions, tracking, low battery 'beep' warning, etc I take my remote bush walks and treks very seriously and am satisfied that Garmin also understand this in producing a quality product. The ability to customise your screens is a favourite also. So much in such a small device.

this product is advertised as being able to be used with normal batteries, this is not the case normally high-quality batteries last for about 30 minutes I got caught out on my first hike, I tried two other different brands of standard batteries but still the same problem I have since bought a set of Panasonic rechargeable batteries which seem to last for about 4-5 hours. I think it would be prudent to advise the consumer of this problem as this device is one that people rely on when going out on a hike and can easily lead someone into a dangerous situation if you go off the manufacturer's specifications.

A reasonably easy to use, reasonably accurate GPS (I was easily able to teach some guys who live without electricity how to use it). I've used it in the Papua New Guinea wilderness and found it to be excellent. Upon overlaying tracks on satellite imagery maps, I was surprised just how accurate it was. Used waypoint averaging all the time in some pretty dense jungle and never failed to get a good reading.

Features and options are great. Beats my previous handhelds by actually working in dense bush with loads of overhead. Using to record native flora, and guiding back to car. Feels good to handle, just remember to keep antenna pointing skyward.

My first unit is a 64 model and has worked well except for the poor backlight of the screen. The 64s has better backlight but consumes battery energy. A set of Alkaline battery lasts only about 8 hours. Base camp software allows me to plot tracks on Google Maps and transfer it to this unit and vice versa. Battery consumption is big negative.
