I purchased two of these items for use - mainly as I was intrigued by the ability if the charger to operate as a power pack while being able to re-charge AA or AAA batteries via solar or my car lighter adaptor. One of the units holds its charge well while the second one discharges very quickly - maybe it's the cells which maybe faulty ( it was, in fairness, a second hand unit ) and I'm trialling them with alternate high quality NiCd rechargeable to see how they last. Recharging from solar panels takes a very long time - and this is even in optimum sunlight conditions ( using a 4 panel 14V 6W portable solar panel ) - but again , it's a handy unit that acts as a power pack and can at least re-charge AA or AAA cells for electronic equipment in remote situations. Re-charging from a wall outlet is also a long process ( at least 8 hrs from almost completely drained ). Understanding its limitations, it's a great device but the re-charge times let the design down and replacement Goal Zero cells are ridiculously expensive.Read full review

Firstly, I'm a huge fan of Goal Zero products and have a great range of their various items - from solar hiking panels ( 7W through to 14W ), Boulder panels, Sherpas, Ventures, Switch 8 and 10s and a couple of Yetis, not to mention other accessories. The Guides and 13W panels were amongst my first purchases and I was intrigued and excited by the opportunity to have a device that could not only recharge my AA and AAA batteries for my portable speakers, but also to be used - at a pinch - as a battery bank. Great concept....but it falls far from the mark in reality. The GZ batteries supplied aren't the best - over priced, take too long to charge and don't hold their charge - I've replaced them with Enloop for better performance. Recharging via USB is too long, as is using the solar panels. I live in Australia and on cloudless days, where my other panels are charging well, my 13W panels - whether individual or chained, will not fully charge a bank of semi discharged AA or AAA batteries ( whether GZ or other Ni Cd ). Thus the best way to recharge the batteries is using a dedicated battery recharger and one of my other GZ power banks with an inverter linked to a solar panel. A fully charged set of batteries - also using the Guide 10 to attempt to recharge my LG phone, will only give around 40 - 50% before it goes flat ( 30% using GZ batteries ). I guess, if I were car camping or needed AA/ AAA batteries for random tasks, having a panel on the dash/ bonnet, suitably propped up might be a possible scenario...but this device falls far short of its design promises. By the way, if you're thinking I have a dud...I actually own 3 of these and they all don't perform as expected.Read full review
