Considered a triumph of French cinema, Jean Renoir's anti-war classic La Grande Illusion was the first foreign film ever to receive a Best Picture Oscar (R) nomination. Set during the First World War, it tells the dramatic tale of two French soldiers, captured and imprisoned in a German POW camp. Involved in an unsuccessful escape attempt, the soldiers are summarily sent to an impenetrable fortress known as Winterborn.
